If you have realized you have put the wrong fuel in your car, DO NOT turn on the ignition or the engine.

It's an easy mistake to make and can happen to any of us especially if you have just got a new car with a different fuel to your previous vehicle.

If you have put the wrong fuel in your car then you should:

        • Remove keys from the ignition - If you attempt to start the car you can risk causing permanent damage which will lead to a costly repair.
        • Inform the petrol station.
        • Move to a safe location by putting the car in neutral and getting someone to push you.
        • Contact your breakdown recovery for the fuel assist team - They will drain the wrong fuel from the car and refuel with the correct fuel.

Things to do to prevent putting the wrong fuel in your car:

        • Avoid any distractions and be attentive when picking up the fuel pump.
        • Don't rely on the colour of the fuel pump, always check and read the pump.
        • If you have just got a new car and have switched fuel types leave notes in the car to remind you.
        • Where possible avoid refueling when you are in a hurry - This is often when mistakes are made.
        • If you have a diesel car you can buy caps to prevent petrol pumps fitting in your car so you wont be able to miss-fuel.
